Rev. Tomás Atencio, Presbyterian Minister

Item

Title

Rev. Tomás Atencio, Presbyterian Minister

Description

A professional photo of Rev. Tomás Atencio, taken midlife, circa 1950s.   Rev. Atencio was known for being gentle, kind, fair, and accepting of differences.   He was usually referred to by Protestants and Catholics alike, as "Tío" Tomás rather than "Mano" or "Don."

Rev. Atencio was educated at Menaul School in Albuquerque during the brief period when they trained pastors.  He had wanted to study far away, at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.  But either church or school authorities didn't allow him to. He was one of the most educated men in the region, yet was confined to a life of poverty and humble service because of his ethnicity.
